Der Film beginnt mit einer Feder, die zu Forrest Gumps Füßen fällt, während er an einer Bushaltestelle in Savannah, Georgia sitzt. Forrest hebt die Feder auf, legt sie in das Kinderbuch "Curious George" und beginnt, der Frau neben ihm seine Lebensgeschichte zu erzählen. Die Zuhörer an der Bushaltestelle wechseln während seiner Erzählungen ständig und zeigen unterschiedliche Haltungen von Unglauben und Gleichgültigkeit bis hin zu ehrfürchtigem Staunen.

Am ersten Schultag trifft Forrest ein Mädchen namens Jenny, deren Leben stellenweise parallel zu seinem verläuft. Nachdem er seine Bein-Schienen abgelegt hat, beeindruckt er mit seiner schnellen Laufgeschwindigkeit und erhält ein Football-Stipendium für das College. Nach seinem Abschluss tritt er der Armee bei und wird nach Vietnam geschickt. Dort schließt er schnell Freundschaft mit einem schwarzen Soldaten namens Bubba, der ihn überzeugt, nach dem Krieg ins Shrimping-Geschäft einzusteigen. Während einer Patrouille wird Forrests Zug angegriffen. Obwohl es ihm gelingt, viele seiner Kameraden zu retten, kommt Bubba ums Leben. Für seinen Mut erhält Forrest die Congressional Medal of Honor.

Während er sich von einer Schusswunde im „Hintern” erholt, entdeckt Forrest sein beeindruckendes Talent im Tischtennis. Er gewinnt an Popularität und spielt bald gegen chinesische Teams. Bei einer Anti-Kriegs-Kundgebung in Washington, D.C. trifft er Jenny wieder, die inzwischen im Hippie-Umfeld lebt.

Zu Hause unterstützt Forrest eine Firma, die Tischtennisschläger herstellt, und verdient dadurch 25.000 Dollar. Dieses Geld nutzt er, um ein Shrimp-Boot zu kaufen, und erfüllt damit sein Versprechen an Bubba. Sein einstiger Vorgesetzter Lieutenant Dan schließt sich ihm an. Anfänglich erfolglos, findet Forrest sein Boot als das einzige unzerstörte Boot nach dem Hurrikan Carmen wieder und beginnt riesige Mengen an Shrimps zu fangen. Lt. Dan investiert das Geld in Apple Computer, und Forrest ist finanziell für den Rest seines Lebens abgesichert. Er kehrt heim, um seine Mutter noch in ihren letzten Tagen zu sehen.

Eines Tages kommt Jenny zu Besuch und Forrest macht ihr einen Heiratsantrag, den sie ablehnt. Dennoch zeigt sie ihm ihre Zuneigung, indem sie mit ihm schläft, und verlässt ihn am nächsten Morgen. Spontan beschließt Forrest, zu laufen. Ohne erkennbaren Grund läuft er mehrmals quer durchs Land und wird dadurch berühmt.

In der Gegenwart wartet Forrest an der Bushaltestelle, weil er einen Brief von Jenny erhalten hat. Sie hat ihn im Fernsehen gesehen und möchte, dass er sie besucht. Als sie sich wiedersehen, erfährt Forrest, dass Jenny einen kleinen Sohn hat, der auch Forrest' Sohn ist. Jenny teilt ihm mit, dass sie an einem Virus (vermutlich HIV) leidet, was jedoch nicht genau erwähnt wird. Gemeinsam ziehen sie zurück nach Greenbow, Alabama. Jenny und Forrest heiraten schließlich. Das Hochzeitsfest wird von Lt. Dan besucht, der nun Prothesen und eine Verlobte hat. Kurz nach der Hochzeit stirbt Jenny.

Der Film endet mit Forrest und seinem Sohn, die auf den Schulbus am ersten Schultag des Jungen warten. Als sie das Buch öffnen, das sein Sohn zur Schule mitnimmt, fällt die weiße Feder vom Anfang des Films heraus. Während der Bus wegfährt, wird die Feder von einem Luftzug erfasst und schwebt in den Himmel empor.
